1095
This steel certainly has the carbon content to make a good cutting edge
(as hard as HRC66 as quenched) yet it is still simple enough not to pose too many problems in the forging. Be a
little more careful with the higher temperatures and it will do just fine.
It does have a slightly lower hardenability (about .5 sec. to avoid the pearlite nose) than the other high carbon 10XX steels
.
If one is careful enough on the austenitizing temperatures brittleness can be
kept under control with lots of carbides left to resist abrasion. Like the other
10XX, the simplicity of this steel makes it harder to go wrong.
